What kind of carpet fibre is best?

There are 4 different kinds of carpet fibre: Wool, Polypropylene, Polyester, and Nylon. You can get blends (such as 80% wool 20% nylon, a common choice) and different varieties.

Nylon is the most common carpet fibre choice. It has the best mix qualities: stain resistant, easy to clean & maintain, durable, and pleasant to touch. Nylons range from mid-low range to the highest quality.

Wool is a popular carpet choice – it is a natural sustainable material, with great elasticity and durability. Wool carpets will last the longest, but do need attention and care to maintain over the years. Wools range from mid range carpet to the highest quality.

Polyester is a popular mid-range choice for carpet fibres. Polyester is durable and stain resistant, and can be touch and durable or treated to be super soft – and is often made from recycled materials. Polyester is a perfect choice for owner occupied homes, and many companies make rental style carpets out of Polyester.

Polypropylene is cheap, tough and durable. It is most commonly seen in office/work spaces & rental properties. Fantastic choice for tight budgets, rental properties, or commercial spaces.

What's the difference between cut and loop pile carpet?

Loop pile carpet: where the fibre comes out of the backing, then back into it, creating a “loop” of fibre that you walk on.

Cut pile carpet: Where the entire roll of carpet has been cut/shaved to a certain height.

Cut pile carpets are the most common choice by far, and more “modern” style.
Loop pile carpets are very popular with wool carpets, and will last much longer than a cut pile will.

Realistically, this matters little in most residential homes: Pick what makes you happy!
For high traffic areas, such as the common areas & hallways of an apartment building, loop pile is definitely a better choice for the durability. If you wanted a soft play area for a childrens daycare, a plush cut pile carpet would be a much better choice. What is the best carpet for residential homes?

You can find excellent quality carpets of any fibre that are suitable for your home; however, the most common choices are nylon, polyester and wool.
Polyester
is an excellent mid-range carpet for your home, some have bonus features like recycled materials or stain free treatment (Perfect for family homes)
Nylon is the most common choice. Soft, durable, long lasting, stain resistant and easy to clean. If it is a rental, a family home, or your special forever home, nylon is a solid choice.
Wool carpets are extremely durable and have a long lifetime. They are a natural material and have a wide variety of styles available. Wool carpets are expensive compared to other options, but you get quality every time.
